It was September 2020 when a dramatic change in the family business and redundancy left us jobless. We decided we needed a change - we left Christchurch behind, and thought that combining our backgrounds and skills (Marcus’ art & craft background and Maria’s marketing and branding experience) could be the key to a brighter future. 

We sold our house, packed our lives into our van (including our two Swedish Vallhunds Raymond & Raisin), and embarked on a journey that would change everything - destination: the City Of Sails!

During the journey, we had the chance to witness how well the creative community was thriving throughout the country, despite the very few options artists and crafters have when searching for quality art and craft supplies locally, especially in rural areas. 

That’s when we came up with the concept of Hobby Land - an online destination where New Zealand creatives can find products from renowned brands at affordable prices, with quick delivery country-wide and knowledgeable, friendly (aka NZ based!) customer service. 

A few weeks, some intense working days, a lot of kms and some dodgy Airbnbs later, we found ourselves in the beautiful Auckland, where we set up Hobby Land in the garage of our rental.

Hobby Land was officially launched in March 2021 for the Kiwi creative community to enjoy. The business started with a bang, and the long working days in isolation during Covid-19 didn’t dampen our spirit. Once Covid-19 was left behind, we were able to hire our first picker packers - one of them, Holly, is still with us to this day, looking after our customers and answering all the queries our community of creatives may have.

Today we are proud to support Kiwi professional and recreational artists and crafters with over 30,000 art and craft products from the most loved brands, and to provide a fast, affordable and personable service to the local community of creatives. 

What does the future hold for Hobby Land? We are looking to expand our range with the latest products and brands on the market, so you can expect an even wider catalogue that encompasses a huge variety of techniques and hobbies.
